The Government has pledged to develop full UK Environmental Accounts by 2020. This work is being led by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). The Natural Capital Committee is providing advice to inform this project.
In December 2012, the ONS published a ‘roadmap’ that sets out the work-plan for the project.
Natural capital accounts at a national level will be a vital tool for decision-makers, if they are done well and have a policy focus. These accounts will enable natural capital to be embedded in strategic economic decision making.
The Committee is contributing to the development of national natural capital accounts, working with the Office for National Statistics and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
